Report

Report: Firstly I must apologise to the Hythe team for a bloody cold Folkestone Sports Centre. It was bad enough on court, let alone the freezing showers afterwards.
It was great to see the Hythe Team back at Folkestone, and how familiar some of the team looked, after playing their first team last week :)
The games were competitive, I think as much as the players struggled to breathe on court in the cold conditions.
Off to a flyer in game one, Mark 'Robbo' Roberts against the lefty - Simon from Ashford. It was great to see Simon back on a Folkestone court. The first two games were close to call with both players taking the game 11 to 9. Robbo then got Simon running and bore, sorry wore, SImon down to take the victory.
Playing at two were the elder statesmen of both clubs, Ian v Phil. Phil's longer experience with the racket took its toll on Ian and whilst a fight back was on the cards in game three, Phil took back control with a few flukes and won the game. It was great to watch, and referee with a clean game.
Match three placed Brett against Dave, another player that used to play his squash in Folkestone. Dave started off with a disadvantage, having not brought his shorts, but was saved by a pair from the Folkestone Squash Club Team cupboard - surely that should give us an extra point head start? A close match ensured, with the first two games being taken by the home side 12 - 10. Dave took command in the third with a clear 3 point win. But a few mistakes in the fourth, gave Brett and the home side the victory.
Last but certainly not least, Simon from Hawkinge, played Mel. Another close tie, going to five sets , with the games going back and forth. Simon looked disgruntled at a few of the referring decisions made by his own marker, but that's part of the joy of the game. Perhaps this gave Simon the impetus to drive on in the fifth game to win 11 - 7.
Whats was great afterwards, with available courts, was the chance to play doubles. So keen were Mel + Dave to keep playing against Simon from Hawkinge and Robbo, that they had to be reminded to come off court before the bar closed and the sandwiches warmed up!
A mix up between two Folkestone players meant almost double the food offering, so an enjoyable catch up with various nibbles and a drink from the bar followed before we were all kicked out at 10pm.
Oh for the old days, warm courts, hot food and a bar open till proper closing! But last night was a good reminder of what team squash (or racket ball - sorry I refuse to use Squash 57,) can be.
Very much look forward to seeing Hythe Team(s) again.
